Halloween Countdown: Haunted House Spread

Next up in the Week O’ Spreads is this Hauntred House Spread by Aeclectic Tarot forum member, metafizzypop. I was attracted to this spread because of it’s edge. There is anger and violence in it and so often Halloween spreads are all trick or treat and nothing below the surface. We need something with teeth *grrrrr*

Let’s see what’s hiding in my attic! (Apparently, nothing unusual. Doc called to say MRI is normal – YAY! -, except for the worst sinuses they’ve ever seen in the history of sinuses ever. Aw shucks, you’re making me blush.)

The layout of cards is supposed to be shaped like a house:

Sun & Moon Tarot – Pre-release images; published cards have white borders

[1] The Skeletons in the Closet – The secrets you keep from others.

2 of Wands

[2] The Rats in the Basement – The secrets you keep from yourself.
2 of Discs

[3] The Black Cat in the Parlour – What makes your claws come out?
Ace of Swords

[4] The Jack O’ Lantern in the Kitchen – What, or who, would you like to take a knife to and carve up?
Ace of Discs

[5] The Ghost in the Bedroom – What, or who, haunts your mind and thoughts?
10 of Cups

[6] The Spider in the Bathroom – What totally creeps you out.
King of Swords

[7] The Bats in the Attic – What drives you to the brink of madness.
King of Wands

[8] The Front Door – The way out of all this insanity ……… or maybe, the way in.
4 of Cups

Oh. My. What am I supposed to make of that? That doesn’t make any sense at all. Or maybe I simply can’t stand to see this truth right now? But look at the cards… Either this is a bit of a “trick”, or there’s a message there that’s going to take a little work to figure out. Not a regular reading by any means.

2 – 2; Ace – Ace; 10 – oh, okay; no, there it is King – King. But the 10 of Cups aren’t lonely after all, because the final card is Cups too. Which means every suit is equally represented in this spread, which never happens and certainly not in conjunction with those card pairings. I also think the re-occurence of the 4 of Cups in this position ties with the F.E.A.R. spread from Sunday. There it was the cause of my fear; here it is the way into madness (and possibly the way out, too) and madness and fear are intricately linked.

So, there is meaning here, I just can’t see it right now. Fiddling with the numbers brings this:

– The Quint is Judgement (and the HP through the cross-sum 2+0=2)
– The suit Quints are 1 Magician (Swords), 2 High Priestess (Wands), 3 Empress (Discs) and 14 Temperance (Cups).
– In the Crossroads Spread I noted how I see the Empress as the union of the Magician and the High Priestess. In that spread the union was reflected in the Lovers; here it is Temperance.

Curioser and curioser.
What an interesting week this is turning out to be.

I loved it from the moment I saw it, but working with it is blowing my mind. Some tarotists are turned off by the “potato heads”, but I think the faceless people allow a lot more room for projecting and identifying.

Ah, now see I’ve always preferred decks with indistinct features on the people. I can’t work with photographic decks for that reason, or any deck where the faces are too detailed and ‘real’ looking.

No, I totally understand what you’re saying, I have the same problem with photographic decks. Don’t own the BoHoGo, but I think it’s a little different because the pictures are closer to illustrations, even with the detail. Maybe it’s the colours or the _way_ the cards have been coloured that makes the difference. But collage/photo decks? We hateses them!!!
